NewVoice Caddie Auto Pin (APL): Which Models and Which Courses It Works OnReading the free service that started Oct 9 and automatically loads the day's pin position, through the official numbers

Voice Caddie's Auto Pin (APL) started in Japan on Friday, Oct 9, 2026. It's a service that automatically loads the day's pin position into your rangefinder. It's free.
The official notice lists 2 compatible products: the watch-type T12 PRO and the SL mini laser. About 504 golf courses are supported.
A watch-type rangefinder normally gives you the distance to the center of the green. Pin at the front or pin at the back, same number. That's what changes.
As a gear nerd who averages 72 with a best of 68 and spends most of his time looking into how gear is built, I read the press release and the official notice side by side. Does it help you, or are you fine with the rangefinder you have? You'll be able to decide that here.
The Gear Nerd's Pick
It pays off for golfers who play supported courses with a watch. A laser rangefinder measures distance by hitting the flag. In other words, lasers were already giving you the number to the pin. It was the watch type that wasn't. What GPS knows is the shape of the green and where you are; it doesn't know where today's flag is standing. So it either gave you the center distance or you moved the pin yourself with a finger. Auto Pin is a system that brings in that 1 missing piece from outside. You keep the lightness of a watch and get a number close to a laser's on your wrist. If I owned a T12 PRO, I'd connect it today. It costs ¥0, after all.

3 cut-offs first.
If your regular courses aren't supported: on those courses, you still get the center distance from today on.
If you don't carry your phone during a round: a Bluetooth connection to the app and a phone data connection are required.
If you own a laser and play mostly courses where you can see the flag: you're already measuring the distance to the pin.
Started Oct 9, free. About 504 courses supported to begin with
These numbers are taken from the press release VC Japan put out on Oct 8, 2026 and the official notice of the same date.
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Start date | Fri, Oct 9, 2026 |
| Price | Free (no extra charge) |
| Supported courses | About 504 (notice). The release says "about 500 courses" |
| What's next | 240 more courses confirmed (740 total). The final goal is 1,000 or more |
| Compatible products on the official page | T12 PRO (watch type), SL mini (laser) |
| What you need | Dedicated app, Bluetooth connection, phone data connection |
| Unsupported holes | Distance to the center of the green. You can move the pin manually |
Against a goal of 1,000, it starts at 504. That's right at half (my calculation). Even adding the 240 confirmed additions gives 740, still only three-quarters.
So there's only 1 thing to do first.
See whether the courses you play most are included. The release says supported courses can be checked on the official site and in the app. If yours aren't in, the rest of this article is "something to read once they're added."
The company says the service started in South Korea in 2020 and has been used more than 5 million times in total. So this isn't a case of Japan being the first test bed.
The official page lists 2 compatible products: the T12 PRO and SL mini
| Model | Type | Official store price (incl. tax) |
|---|---|---|
| T12 PRO | Watch type (GPS) | ¥59,950 |
| SL mini | Laser + GPS | ¥48,400 |
Here, the release and the notice word things differently.
The press release words it broadly: "all compatible models among the products sold to date." It says it works not only on the latest models but also on Bluetooth-capable models already sold. But not a single model name appears.
The official notice is the opposite. Listed under "Auto Pin compatible products" are the T12 PRO and the SL mini. Just 2 (checked Oct 9, 2026).
Which is right?
I don't know. If you own an earlier model like the T11 PRO or T-Ultra, the release makes it look like it should work, while the notice doesn't name your model. Before buying another device, connect the one you have to the app and check. That's the fastest way, and it costs ¥0.
2 app names come up as well. The steps in the notice say "the MyVoiceCaddie or VOICECADDIE Golf app," while the Q&A section on the same page says "must be linked with the MyVoiceCaddie app." If in doubt, start with MyVoiceCaddie and you won't go wrong.
What the watch type didn't know was where today's flag is
What a GPS rangefinder has is a map. The shape of the green, where the bunkers are, the spot where you're standing now. All of it the same yesterday and today.
Only the flag moves every day.
So the watch type has worked from the things that don't move. Front, center and back of the green. It gives 3 numbers, and the player looks at the flag and adds or subtracts from there.
Auto Pin brings in the 1 thing that moves from outside. There are 2 ways it does that, according to the release.
- Cart navigation data. The cart navigation units installed at many golf courses in Japan hold the day's pin positions. It uses those.
- A transmitter attached to the pin (APL). Shaped like a red cube, it collects the flag's position and sends it. The company says this gives a more accurate position.
Clever.
The first is a method that doesn't require courses to install new equipment. My reading is that this is probably why it could start at about 504 right away.
So how many yards does it change? I'll work it out with a hypothetical example.
My 7-iron goes 160 yards (my own measurement). Assume a 10-yard gap between clubs, and the 8-iron is 150. Say the green is 30 yards deep and it's 150 yards to the center.
Looking at the center alone, it's an 8-iron. But if the flag is at the back edge it's 165, and even a 7-iron is 5 yards short. At the front edge it's 135, and even a 9-iron is too much. A shot hit to the center number can be off by up to 1.5 clubs (an estimate calculated from my own measurement; the green numbers are hypothetical).
1.5 clubs. That's the distance between a birdie putt and a chip from the back rough.
The weak points are in the release too.
If the pin position changes partway through a round, there can be a delay before it shows up. And your phone has to have a data connection. What happens on a mountain course where the signal drops? The official sources don't go that far.
If you own a laser, it only helps on holes where you can't see the flag
It may be a surprise, but one of the two compatible products is a laser: the SL mini.
Hit the flag with a laser and you get the distance to the pin. Accuracy is ±1 yard. Even without Auto Pin, it was giving you the number.
So what was it added for?
For when you can't see the flag.
Uphill holes where you can only see the tip of the flag, holes that bend around behind trees, morning fog. A laser can't measure what it can't see, so on holes like that the SL mini, which also carries GPS, ends up relying on the map-side number, and that number now changes from the center to today's pin. That's where it helps.
Put the other way: someone who owns another laser and can see the flag on most holes. I can't find a reason for that person to switch to the SL mini for Auto Pin.
Garmin's new model charges extra; Voice Caddie's is free
Just 2 day(s) ago, Garmin announced the Approach S72. ¥128,000. An official note says features such as reading green slope and putting analysis need a paid app membership.
Voice Caddie's Auto Pin is different. ¥0. If you own the device, you just connect it to the app and use it as is, and there's no point where you pay more later.
These aren't features competing on the same ground, so it's not a question of which is better. What the S72 added is records you read after hitting; what Auto Pin added is a distance you look at before hitting.
Still, for someone who only wants that 1 number before the shot, getting it done with just a ¥59,950 device is a big deal. The difference is ¥68,050 (my calculation).
1 note on competition, too.
Distance to the pin falls on the side of the "distance information" that Rule 4.3a of the Rules of Golf allows during a round. What isn't allowed is measuring elevation changes, and you turn that off in the device's settings. Some competitions ban rangefinders altogether, so check the Committee's rules before you play.
Before you buy, check whether your regular courses are included

Get the order wrong and ¥59,950 becomes a watch that only gives you the center distance. First, 2 things you can do for ¥0.
- Write down the 3 courses you play most and check whether they're supported. You can look on the official site or in the app. If none of the 3 is in, wait for now. Look again once the additional 240 courses are out.
- If you own a Voice Caddie, connect it to the app. Even for models not named on the official page, the release says it works on Bluetooth-capable models. Connect it and see whether the pin moves on a supported course.
- Only now, whether to buy. The T12 PRO if you want to play with a watch, the SL mini if you want to measure by hitting the flag.
To begin with, will knowing the distance to the pin lower your score?
If you miss greens because of left-right curve, a better distance number won't change that. Count the holes where you missed the green in your last 3 rounds, split into "short / long" and "left / right." Only golfers with mostly short-long misses are the audience for this.
A table lining up lasers and watch types by weight and price is in the rangefinder rankings.
T12 PRO or SL mini: which to pick
T12 PRO: the one Auto Pin helps most
With a watch type, you just glance at your wrist before you set up. There's none of the laser's routine of taking it out, looking through it and hitting the target. The only thing missing was the pin position.
That gap gets filled. On days you play a course that's included, 1 weakness of the watch type disappears. Of the 2 models, this is the one that gets the full benefit this time.
Great for you if you
- Your regular courses are supported
- Taking out a rangefinder for every shot is a hassle
- You keep your phone in your pocket or the cart during the round
Better to skip if you
- Golfers who play all sorts of courses, many of them not supported
- Golfers who only trust a number measured off the flag
SL mini: a laser with insurance for days you can't see the flag
A laser of about 130g that measures 5–800 yards with ±1 yard accuracy (per the official store). Normally you measure by hitting the flag, and rely on Auto Pin only on holes where you can't see it. The division of roles is clear.
Even on unsupported courses, its job as a laser doesn't change at all. For golfers who don't have set courses, this is the safer choice. I've written up the detailed specs in the Voice Caddie SL mini review.
Great for you if you
- You play a variety of courses
- Many of your holes hide the flag, uphill or over trees
- You'd rather pay ¥11,550 less than the T12 PRO (my calculation)
Better to skip if you
- Golfers who want to do away with taking it out and looking through it
- Golfers who already own a laser and have no complaints
Who can skip it
- Golfers whose regular courses aren't among the roughly 504.
- Golfers who own a laser and can see the flag on most holes. You already have the distance to the pin.
- Golfers who don't carry a phone during the round, or put it in airplane mode. You can't meet the requirements.
- Golfers who miss greens left and right. A distance number won't fix that.
In order of cost, cheapest first. Look up supported courses (¥0). Connect the device you own to the app (¥0). If you still need one, the SL mini (¥48,400) or the T12 PRO (¥59,950).
I'll rewrite this article when the course count grows to 740 and when the compatible products list changes.
Other rangefinders released in 2026 are lined up in New Rangefinders 2026.
Was the course you play most one that gets today's pin?

FAQ
When did Voice Caddie's Auto Pin (APL) start, and what does it cost?
It started in Japan on Friday, Oct 9, 2026. If you own a compatible product, you can use it at no extra charge (confirmed in VC Japan's press release and official notice, Oct 9, 2026).
Which models are compatible with Auto Pin?
The official notice lists 2 under "Auto Pin compatible products": the T12 PRO and the SL mini (checked Oct 9, 2026). The press release says it also works on Bluetooth-capable models already sold, but it gives no model names. If you own an earlier model, the quickest way is to connect it to the app and check.
Which courses can I use it on?
About 504 golf courses in Japan at launch. Another 240 courses are confirmed to be added, and the company is ultimately aiming for 1,000 or more. You can check supported courses on the official site and in the app. On holes that aren't supported, you get the distance to the center of the green.
What do I need to use it?
The dedicated smartphone app (MyVoiceCaddie), a Bluetooth connection to the rangefinder, and a data connection on your phone. Start golf mode as usual on a supported course and the day's pin position comes in. If the pin position changes during the round, there can be a delay before it shows up.
