Fairway woodsNew Fairway Woods 2026A gear nerd who averages 72 compares 3-wood volume, length and price and picks one
Updated: Oct 5, 2026Contains affiliate links
When I line up new fairway woods, the first thing I doubt is the catalog "length". Every maker measures it differently. Doubting that first is what a gear nerd does. If I, averaging 72, pick one from the 2026 releases, it's the Srixon ZXi RKT fairway wood (Sep 12 release, ¥55,000). It's the cheapest new model from a major maker, yet it has a forged face and a maraging steel body. No corners cut on build. If you want more forgiveness, or you hit down on the ball, there's a different pick. I wrote it in the conclusion below. The comparison runs from the TaylorMade, Callaway and Mizuno releases in January to March, to the Titleist GTS in June and the PRGR RS in July, all using official numbers. The PING (G440) and XXIO (14) models released in 2025 are still their latest.
The Gear Nerd's Pick
Srixon ZXi RKT fairway wood (¥55,000) The cheapest 2026 release from a major maker, yet it has a forged face (HT1770M), a maraging steel body, even a sleeve and a 10g weight. Best balance of price and build.

If you want to launch the 3-wood high with ease
TaylorMade Qi4D MAX fairway wood (¥67,100) A 200cc 3-wood, the largest and shallowest head in this comparison. It's 10cc bigger than the last one, and the rear weight can now be swapped.
If you hit down on the ball
Titleist GTS3 fairway metal (¥69,300) A thicker (deep) face and a slightly compact head. The maker also describes it as being for players who hit down through the ball. If you sweep it, take the GTS2 released at the same time.

Bottom line
The Gear Nerd's Pick is the Srixon ZXi RKT fairway wood (Sep 12, ¥55,000). It's the cheapest new model from a major maker, with a forged face and a maraging steel body. No corners cut on build.
For forgiveness, the TaylorMade Qi4D MAX at 200cc on the 3-wood. If you hit down on the ball, the Titleist GTS3.
One caution: catalog "length" is measured differently by each maker. Don't compare on the number alone (explained below).

The table lists only the core models you can buy at a normal golf shop.
Most prices rose ¥4,400 to ¥6,600 over the last generation (the PRGR RS went from ¥49,500 to ¥59,400, up ¥9,900). Only the Callaway QUANTUM MAX stays at ¥67,100, the same as its predecessor, the ELYTE.
The gear nerd's take: how to read catalog numbers
1. "Length" can't be compared directly
There is no shared way to measure club length across makers. Srixon and Mizuno say "60-degree method," PRGR says "PRGR method," and most others don't say how they measure. Even two "43 inch" clubs aren't necessarily the same length if they're measured differently.
So I read catalog length as a rough guide until I've measured the real club. If two clubs interest you, stand them side by side on the shop floor. That's the surest way.
For the PRGR RS, the maker says it made the club 0.5 in shorter than before and made the head heavier. Shortening the length and matching the swing feel with weight is a sound way to build it.
2. A bigger head isn't always more forgiving
3-wood volume ranges from 162cc on the Callaway QUANTUM MAX to 200cc on the TaylorMade Qi4D MAX, a 38cc spread.
But for a fairway wood hit off the ground, face height (shallowness) and a low center of gravity matter more than volume for getting the ball up. The QUANTUM MAX is 6cc smaller than the last one, but the maker says its floating "Speedwave 2.0" inside the sole keeps ball speed up on hits low on the face.
If you often tee it up, go bigger. If you mostly hit off turf, look at shallowness before volume. That's the order I'd use to narrow it down.
3. Changing loft on the sleeve changes the face angle too
Most 2026 releases except the XXIO come with a sleeve (the part that changes the loft).
With many sleeves, adding loft makes the face look closed, and taking it off makes it look open. You add loft to get the ball up, then at address the face looks aimed left and it feels wrong. After you adjust, always check how the face looks at address.
Sleeve and weight parts have weight too. The Callaway QUANTUM MINI SPINNER is a model that deliberately drops the sleeve and glues the head on.
Key models (from the makers' descriptions)
Srixon ZXi RKT (Sep 12, ¥55,000)
Lofts are #3+ 13.5° (custom order), #3 15°, #5 18° and #7 21°. The face is forged HT1770M, the body maraging steel. The maker says the new "RKT FACE" changes how thickness is distributed and how loft is set on the upper face.
From the previous ZXi (2024), the price goes ¥50,600 to ¥55,000. The #3 volume goes from 187 to 181cc, a bit smaller, and the length is the same. Left-handed comes in #3 and #5.
What changed is mainly the face construction and the price. Nothing in the published numbers suggests a gap big enough to rush a swap if you were happy with the last ZXi. That's my read.
TaylorMade Qi4D / Qi4D MAX (Jan 29, ¥67,100)
The Qi4D is a 185cc 3-wood with an 8g weight at the front. The 3 and 3HL (16.5°) have a maraging steel face. The Qi4D MAX is a large, shallower 3-wood at 200cc with an 8g weight at the rear.
The old Qi35 had weights you couldn't remove. The Qi4D has swappable weights. The price goes from ¥60,500 to ¥67,100. There's also a lighter MAX LITE (REAX 45, about 287g in the 3-wood).
Callaway QUANTUM MAX / MAX FAST (Feb 6, ¥67,100)
The QUANTUM MAX is a 15° 3-wood at 162cc, with seven clubs from the 3HL at 16.5° to the 11-wood at 27°, the most club numbers of any model here. The 3, 3HL and 5 come with a sleeve (the previous ELYTE had one only on the 3 and 3HL).
The QUANTUM MAX FAST is the lightest in the series (about 297 to 300g in the 3-wood) with more loft (16° on the 3-wood). It's built to be easy to draw.
Titleist GTS2 / GTS3 (Jun 11, ¥69,300)
The maker says a resin-type material wraps the crown to the sides, freeing up about 16g of weight for a low, deep center of gravity. The face is a forged L-cup.
The GTS2 is a shallower, larger-looking head for sweepers; the GTS3 is thicker and slightly compact for players who hit down. Both let you swap the heel and toe weights. Titleist doesn't publish head volume.
Mizuno JPX ONE (Mar 6, ¥58,300)
190cc on the 3-wood, 175cc on the 5 and 160cc on the 7. The face is forged maraging steel, the body stainless and the crown carbon. It comes with "Quick Switch" to change loft and lie.
From the previous ST-MAX 230, the #3 volume goes from 180 to 190cc and the price from ¥52,800 to ¥58,300. The standard shaft (TENSEI BLUE MM F) is lighter than before in S-R and R.
PRGR RS (Jul 10, ¥59,400)
185cc and 42.5 in on the 3-wood (PRGR method). The face is CNC-milled thin from maraging steel, and the body is precision-cast maraging steel. New this time, a cartridge that turns in 8 directions lets you adjust launch height and draw bias.
PING G440 and XXIO 14 (released 2025, still the latest)
PING's only new 2026 model is the women's G LE 4. For men, the G440 (MAX, SFT, LST, HL) from February 2025 is still the latest. XXIO's latest is also the XXIO 14 / 14+ from November 2025, and its fairway wood has no sleeve or other adjustment.

Before you buy, decide whether you need a 3-wood
Before picking among the new models, think about whether you need a 3-wood at all. For many golfers, the next club after the driver fits better as a 5-wood or 7-wood than a 3-wood. Do you need a 3-wood? explains how to decide from loft and length.
One more thing: how easy a club is to swing depends more on shaft weight than on the head. My rule of thumb is about the same weight as your driver shaft, or a little heavier. Go too light and your timing tends to drift.

FAQ
What's the newest fairway wood as of Sep 2026?
The Srixon ZXi RKT fairway wood (¥55,000), released Sep 12. Among limited runs, there's the PRGR RS PROTOTYPE One Clover (from ¥70,400, custom orders only), released Sep 4.
Is there a successor to the PING G440 fairway wood?
As of Sep 15, no successor has been announced for the men's line. The G440 K released in 2026 is a driver only, with no fairway wood.
Can I compare fairway wood lengths between makers?
I wouldn't. Srixon and Mizuno use the 60-degree method, PRGR uses its own method, and the way of measuring differs by maker. Standing them side by side in a shop is the sure way.
Which 3-wood has the biggest head?
Among those compared here, the TaylorMade Qi4D MAX at 200cc. The smallest is the Callaway QUANTUM MAX at 162cc.
