"I hear 34 inches is standard for putters, but is 34 right for me too?" For anyone unsure before buying. Short answer: PING's standard is 34 inches, customizable from 31 to 36 (PING Golf Japan official). The gap between 33 and 35 is 2 inches (about 51 mm).
My current putter, and what I found trying 33 and 35 inches: I have used a PING SCOTTSDALE ANSER (34 inches, blade, 3° loft, 70° lie) on the course about three rounds a month since September 2025. My previous putter, a mallet from another brand, was 35 inches.
- I am 172 cm tall, my forward bend is average, and my arms form something close to a triangle. I looked for a length where my elbows are not cramped at address and my eyes sit over the ball or slightly inside it, and PING's standard 34 inches feels right.
- In October 2026 I hit five balls each with a 33-inch and a 35-inch putter on an indoor mat at a local golf shop. With the 35 (about 5 minutes), my forward bend got shallower, my eyes moved outside the ball, and I pushed two. With the 33 (about 3 minutes), my elbows felt cramped and I pulled one.
- A word for the undecided: measure the length of your current putter with a tape measure before you go to the shop.

Bottom line
Putter lengths from the makers' standards cluster at 33 to 35 inches. PING's standard is 34 inches, customizable from 31 to 36; Odyssey and TaylorMade offer 33 and 34; L.A.B. Golf offers 33, 34 and 35. One inch is 25.4 mm, so 33 and 35 differ by about 51 mm. Decide by setup, eye line and fatigue.
Numbers come from each maker's Japan page (PING re-read on Nov 7, 2026), and I calculated the conversions myself.

Standard lengths cluster in three sizes, 33 to 35 inches. Only PING lets you pick from 31 to 36 inches in 1-inch steps, so it suits anyone who fits each club one at a time.
How many millimeters apart are 33, 34 and 35 inches?
One inch is about 25.4 mm. 33 inches is 838.2 mm, 34 inches is 863.6 mm and 35 inches is 889.0 mm. The gap between 33 and 35 is 2 inches, about 50.8 mm.
PING lets you choose from 31 to 36 inches, so you can pick your own length from a 5-inch (about 127 mm) range.
My case: how I chose a length, and my 3 m results after changing
I chose by height and depth of forward bend, looking for a length where my elbows are not cramped at address and my eyes sit over the ball or slightly inside. From wrist to grip end, at address the grip end tucks inside my left forearm with about two fingers to spare.
I had the lie angle measured with a shop gauge. The toe looked raised, so I had it set up 1°, from 69° to 70°. I have kept the length at 34 inches.
After I changed from a 35-inch mallet to a 34-inch Anser-style putter, I went from 5 to 7 makes out of 10 putts from 3 m. That was the result of changing the whole putter, not only the length. I have had no chance to try the 33 or 35 on the course, so I could not check the difference in back and neck fatigue.
Three criteria for choosing
- Setup: depth of forward bend and the shape of your arms (triangle or pentagon). Mine is average forward bend, close to a triangle, and my elbows were not cramped at 34 inches.
- Eye line: whether your eyes are right over the ball at address. Changing the length changes the eye line.
- Fatigue: a longer putter tires the back and neck, and a shorter one feels cramped. Check by playing one round.
I settled on PING's standard 34 inches, at 172 cm with a triangular setup. The 33 cramped my elbows and the 35 pushed my eyes outward. Before choosing a length, measure your current putter, and in the shop hit at least ten balls with each length.
