PING IronsLofts and prices of the G740, G440, i540, i240 and BLUEPRINT

Updated: Sep 13, 2026Contains affiliate links

PING's irons have 7-iron lofts from 28° to 33°. The first thing that stands out when you line them up is that the G440 and i540, and the BLUEPRINT S and T, each have the same loft in every club. The distance steps are the same. What differs is construction and price. Prices are listed per club, matching Ping Golf Japan's official listing.

Bottom line: how I'd choose

If you can't choose between the G440 and i540, I'd point you to the G440 first. The distance is the same, and the cavity G440 is about ¥10,000 cheaper per club than the hollow i540. If you want to pay that difference for the hollow look, take the i540.
The 7-iron is 28° on the G740, 29° on the G440 and i540, 31.5° on the i240 and 33° on the BLUEPRINT.
If you're hunting for the models before the G740 and i540 used, watch the loft difference. The new ones have weaker (higher) lofts.

Source: each official product page of Ping Golf Japan. Graphite shafts: ¥34,100 for the G740 and i240, ¥31,900 for the G440, ¥41,800 for the i540. The BLUEPRINT can't be fitted with graphite.

The G440 and i540 have the same loft in every club from the 4-iron to the PW. The differences are that the G440 is a cavity and the i540 is hollow, and a price gap of about ¥10,000 per club. The distance steps are the same. What you choose is feel and looks.

The BLUEPRINT S and T also have the same loft in every club. The T is a full muscle-back; the S adds a little forgiveness. The differences are shape and bounce angle.

The G740 has a 40° PW, 2–5° stronger (lower) than the others. As I wrote in the wedge article, the stronger the PW, the more likely you need one more wedge in the bag.

What's interesting is that the G740 and i540 got weaker lofts when they were renewed. It isn't always true that "newer models are stronger and go farther." When you buy a previous model used, note that the same club number can differ by 1.5° in loft.

FAQ

How do the G440 and i540 irons differ?

Loft is the same in every club from the 4-iron to the PW. The G440 is a cavity design at ¥29,700 for 1 club (steel), and the i540 is hollow at ¥39,600. The distance steps are the same; construction, looks and price differ.

How much does a PING iron set cost?

Ping Golf Japan's official site shows prices per 1 club. For example, a 6-club set of the G440 in steel (the 5-iron to PW) is ¥29,700 × 6 clubs = ¥178,200 (my own calculation).
