Callaway IronsQUANTUM MAX, MAX FAST, three X FORGED models and the APEX Ai150

Updated: Sep 13, 2026Contains affiliate links

Callaway's irons divide into the forgiving stainless QUANTUM, the forged soft-iron X FORGED, and the better-player APEX. Even at the same 29° 7-iron, the QUANTUM MAX is stainless and the X FORGED STAR is forged soft iron. If the distance steps are the same, the rest comes down to feel and budget.

Bottom line: how I'd choose

For forgiveness, the QUANTUM MAX; for forged soft-iron feel with some distance, the X FORGED STAR.
The 7-iron lofts are 28° for the QUANTUM MAX FAST, 29° for the QUANTUM MAX and X FORGED STAR, 30° for the X FORGED STAR+2.0, 31° for the APEX Ai150 and 33° for the X FORGED.
If you want to keep the budget down, consider last year's ELYTE too, now at the outlet. It has the same loft in every club as the QUANTUM MAX, so the distance steps don't change.

The QUANTUM MAX irons have the same loft in every club as last year's ELYTE irons (29° for the 7-iron, for example). The difference is construction: the ELYTE is hollow, and the QUANTUM has the area around the head hollowed out. The ELYTE irons have already moved to the official outlet, so if you can get them cheap, you get the same distance steps.

The QUANTUM MAX FAST five-club set starts at the 7-iron and includes the AW. Because the lofts are stronger, they've added one more club at the bottom.

The three X FORGED models are all forged soft iron, but the 7-iron is 33°, 29° or 30°. The X FORGED STAR is 3–4° stronger than the X FORGED, for players who want distance while keeping the feel. The 2026 version changed the material from S20C to the softer S15C.

FAQ

How do the QUANTUM MAX and ELYTE irons differ?

The lofts are the same in every club (29° for the 7-iron, for example). The ELYTE is hollow; the QUANTUM MAX is an undercut design with the area around the head hollowed out. The ELYTE has moved to the official outlet.
